Yeah, premieres are potent experiences. I find I rarely look at the players when my pieces are played. No matter how many times we go through it, the recording always sounds much better a few days later….

I’m very grateful for the opportunity of subsequent performances. My works improve dramatically after about three performances. I can take comfort in the anecdote about Bartok-supposedly he wouldn’t let the string quartets be published until they’d been performed a few times……
