Random Access Music
This is the festival I founded in 2013. It’s been running every year since its founding, except for 2020 when we had to cancel due to the COVID19 pandemic which hit New York City first and, probably, the hardest. It’s a 3 da event with 5 concerts of only music composed in the last 50 years, performed 5 groups who aplied for inclusion. In the past, we have presented well-established artists like Kathlene Suppove and wonderful emerging groups like Hypercube.
The 1st night, Thursday, May 15, the RAM players will present my 3 American Folk Tunes. The first in the set is I Bought Me a Cat–which is a humorous tune from the Colonial Era that has the players and singer making barnyard animal noises, from QUACK! to GRRRF to NEIGH! and others. I laughed out loud at the rehearsal, especially because the band couldn’t contain their mirth. The second is a slow love song, probably originating in Ireland, and has been performed by the likes of Bob Dylan and others. The third is an African-American song that may have been used by escaping slaves as a memory aid to help them on their travel North, following the Big Dipper that contains the North Star.
